Top tips for new mums

When you become a mum you’ll be swamped with information and flooded with all different advice. Everything is new and it can be hard to know what to listen to and what to believe.

I’ve been a new mum myself and these are the top tips I want to share with other new mums:

  • Time really does fly! In the early days, weeks and months, you’ll wonder where the time has gone! Babies don’t stay little for long, make the most of that time.
  • It does get easier. When you feel like you’re in a really tiring, really tough phase, hold onto the fact that it does get easier and things will get better.
  • It’s okay to cry. Along with all the joy that being a new mum brings, it can also be exhausting, lonely and pretty tough too. It’s okay to cry. I think I cried non stop the first 2 weeks after Kory was born!
  • Motherhood is not a competition. Don’t get hung up on ‘not being as good as the rest’ and ‘not being the perfect parent’. Do your best, it’s all you can do and take it from me, you’re doing a fabulous job!
  • Just go with the flow. Babies don’t come with an instruction manual – if they did it would all be simple. What works for some mums and some babies won’t work for others and that’s fine. Work out what works for you and your baby and remember, parenting is not a one-size-fits-all thing!
  • Everyone will try and offer you advice on what to do, what you shouldn’t do, what you’re doing wrong and what worked for them. It can be overwhelming… And quite annoying. Listen to the advice, smile and then do what YOU feels right.
  • Sleep whenever you get the chance. You will hear ‘sleep when your baby sleeps’ quite a lot. This, in a way, can be quite annoying. Its the only bit of time you get to yourself and there are many other things you could be doing other than sleeping. However, it’s also wise advice. If and when you can, be sure to grab some snooze, you will need it and you need to look after yourself too!
  • If someone offers help, say yes and if you need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it. It’s tiring being a new mum, don’t try to do it all on your own.

You don’t have to be supermum! Oh wait, you already are 🙂

If you’re a new mum, I hope you found my ‘top tips for new mums’ to be helpful. What are your top tips for new mums?
